KangarooBox was formed in the winter of ‘05 with the idea that Open Source Software was not being utilized properly by the world in general. During lunch one day the conversation focused on how most “corporate” software in the world today didn’t deliver what was promised; purchases were mostly driven by persistent sales staff offering “free” incentives (a.k.a. golf trips for upper management). Everyone at the table had been down the road of installing and configuring such software over the years, and had become frustrated by the lack of trust in alternative sources.
Enter Open Source Software! We had all used copious amounts of great open source software in the past, and knew that it could perform as well or better than the expensive proprietary stuff. The big question we had was how to get upper management to see the virtues of being free. The answer was to form our own company to sell and support great software around the world. There were other established players already doing the same thing (RedHat, IBM, etc.), so we needed to provide a distinctive product. We decided to do what the others can’t or won’t do - build appliances to house our software.
The idea of supplying the hardware, software, and service made us happy beyond compare. However, every single thing we’d ever heard about the computer business says that selling hardware is wrong, hard, and just plain stupid. We were ready and willing to take on that challenge and prove everyone wrong. The single best way to get software in the hands of those who need it most is by making it simple to install and use. And what could be more simple than an appliance?!
